Otan
Rehabilitation Center: Nyaru Menteng
Age: 12 years
Current Position: Back in the wild at Bukit Baka Bukit Raya National Park
Rescued from Buntok, South Barito Regency, Otan arrived at the Nyaru Menteng Rehabilitation Centre in 2015 when he was about one and a half years old. After progressing through Forest School, he moved to the pre-release stage on Bangamat Island in December 2023, where he continues to strengthen his survival skills.
In November 2025, after nearly ten years of rehabilitation, Otan was successfully released into his natural habitat in Bukit Baka Bukit Raya National Park, Central Kalimantan.
Calm and observant, Otan now spends his days high in the forest canopy, foraging and navigating his surroundings independently. His preference for distance from other orangutans reflects the awareness and self-reliance essential for a wild orangutan’s life.
With his curiosity, independence, and strong survival instincts, Otan has reclaimed the freedom that once belonged to him, beginning a new chapter back in the wild.
