Getting Married in Denmark
According
to the Danish Marriage Act and rules prescribed by the Danish Ministry of
Justice, the following documents are required to be married in Denmark:
- Birth certificate and valid
passport.
Note: If your name has been legally changed since the issuance of your birth certificate or passport, you should present an official court decree to this effect.
- Persons under the age of 18 may
not contract marriage in Denmark
- If one of the parties is under
guardianship, documentation of the guardian’s consent to the marriage must
be presented.
- If one of the parties has been
previously married, divorce decree or death certificate must be submitted.
In Copenhagen, documentation should be forwarded to: Københavns
Overpræsidium (the Prefect of Copenhagen), Hammerensgade 1, 1267
Copenhagen K., Tel. +45 33 12 23 80 for approval before arriving in
Copenhagen. If you plan to get married outside the city of Copenhagen, you
should contact the local "Statsforvaltning" (the regional state
administration).
In general,
register offices need a few weeks to process the papers.
Some
churches and register offices may require additional documents or may require
that you reside in their municipality (kommune) for a period of time before the
marriage may be performed. Please contact the church office or the register
office in the city or town where you wish to be married to confirm their
requirements.
For more information please check the website of the City of Copenhagen.
